Chapter Thirteen

Jane sat at the table for a while, deep in thought. She felt no rush to go back to the cupola room after her recent experiences there. She finally rose from the table. Linton will wonder about my long absence.

The new revelation of Alfred and Beatrix’s daughter and her early death gave her an uneasy feeling. Somehow, all of it was linked to the trunk and the locks of hair upstairs, but Jane had no idea how.

It’s over now. They’re all dust—family, perhaps, but still dust.

The thought that she had used before to calm herself when the past seemed too real didn’t help now. Because it’s still here somehow, almost as real as this moment.

Her palms sweated as she climbed the steps. The door opened onto the third floor, and Linton walked toward her. “I’m done…unless you want to go back in with me.” He grinned at her, his ponytail mussed, blond hair haloing his head.

“That’s okay.” Jane enjoyed the distraction of his angelic appearance. “How’d the shots go?”

“Great. That room is amazing—the vantage point and the old stuff in there. Thanks so much for letting me come by again. I really think I can do something with these.” He eyes shined as they walked downstairs together. “With your cousin’s permission, of course.”

“Yes, I’m sure she’ll grant it. I can’t wait to see how they turn out.”

“I’ll let you know.” They stood near the front door now. An awkward silence descended between them.

“I’ve enjoyed this, but I don’t want to say goodbye to you or just I’ll see you later when I have the photos doctored up.” Linton stepped closer, and Jane held her breath. “I want to take you out sometime on a real date and get to know you—not just the house.” He swept his hand out with a laugh.

“Oh, I—”

“What is it?”

“I really enjoy your company, Linton, but honestly, I’ve just come out of a terrible relationship a few months back, and I need some time.”

He nodded. “I can understand that.” He cocked an eyebrow at her. “But it never hurts to ask.” His smile broke the tension between them.

“Great. That means a lot.” She reached out and squeezed his hand. A twinge of disappointment rushed through her that she couldn’t seem to feel anything for him. He’s so nice…just the kind of guy who would be good for me.

“I’m glad, Jane.”

She smiled and opened the door for him, watching him leave.

The house closed in around her again, and she felt the urge to get away from it. Something felt off here, and she had to admit to herself that it had felt off for a day or so now.

Since I opened the trunk and took the locks of hair out…

Jane brushed the thought aside for the second time, but she didn’t remember ever feeling the presence of a house like she did this one. Maybe it wasn’t the house. Perhaps it was something else. Her thoughts turned to the dark eyed girl in the wedding picture.
